18th-century Italian capriccio opainting. Mounted in a beveled gilt wood frame, the oil on canvas painting depicts a dreamy expanse of Roman architectural ruins. 

A capriccio is a genre of painting that falls under the more general term landscape painting, though more specifically foregrounds some sort of architectural fantasy. The style was extremely popular during the 16th-18th-centuries, the most famous example being Goya's haunting Los Caprichos.
