I am often asked what attracts me to certain pieces. It’s not just the silhouette or the era, it’s the texture of time. A hand-planed surface that isn't quite level or a worn finish that has softened after a century of use adds character. Subtle variations such as these carry the evidence of soul.

Another question is how I suggest incorporating antiques into a modern home. For me, it is about finding a new language when these aged surfaces encounter saturated depth and a kind of gentle friction. A black leather chair set against an inky teal or a warm walnut wood sideboard paired with a Tuscan red backdrop takes on new meanings.  They are not lost, they are defined. The shadows become part of the composition illuminating the narrative etched into the material.

This tension is exactly what we are exploring in Santa Monica.

Our collaboration with Schumacher and Sydney Harbour Paint Company, moves beyond simple staging to create environments where color and light act as co-authors. You will see it the moment you walk into this exposition at Tim Clarke Design studio.

An industrial framed worktable, with its raw, scarred wood top, suddenly feels sculptural when isolated against a saturated wall. A grand and intricately carved architectural empire mirror, with its original pediment, finds unexpected modernity. Even the tailored lines of 18th century Tuscan chair take on new a new depth.

The objects in this exhibition are not static. They are having a rich conversation with the contemporary world.
