Oil on board painting by artist Roger Hayward (1899-1979), depicting the entrance to a Victorian-style home as seen from the street below. With a wonderful sense of proportion and scale, the artist has taken up a unique perspective, thereby imbuing the piece with a feeling of suspense. 

Hayward was a prolific mid-century California painter, architect, and inventor. A member of the design team for the L.A. Stock Exchange and the Doheny Library, he is known mostly for his scientific illustrations and commercial works in watercolor. His landscapes and architectural scenes reveal modernist concerns for architectural history and material entropy.
