U091319 | SUNDIAL

Turn-of-the-century Glaswegian-style bronze sundial produced by Messrs. Barker and Co. of Clerkenwell, England. The decorative program has a psychedelic, art-nouveau feeling. The gnomon has been styled as a magnificently attenuated sea-creature, and the circular base on which it rests has been inscribed with a large Primitivist drawing of the sun's face. The perimeter features the mysterious and poetic lines of Rev. Greville J. Chester: Amydst ye floures / I tell ye houres, / Time wanes away / As floures decay, / Beyond ye tombe / freshe floures bloome, / So man shall ryse / Above ye skyes.

England, circa 1900
